A Tory leadership hopeful has been left red-faced after making a bizarre boast during a live interview.
Mel Stride, a former minister, was speaking to the BBC’s Nick Robinson when he claimed to have ‘changed the course of history’.
However, his attempt to big himself up was met with ridicule from Robinson, who pointed out that Stride’s actual achievements were somewhat more modest.
Stride, who is a former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said: ‘I’ve changed the course of history, I’ve changed the course of the country.’
But Robinson was quick to correct him, saying: ‘I think you’ll find that’s not quite accurate, Mel.’
Stride’s comments came as he launched his bid to become the next leader of the Conservative Party, following the resignation of Boris Johnson.
Despite his boasts, Stride’s chances of winning the leadership election are seen as slim, with many bookmakers having him at odds of 50-1.
However, Stride remains defiant, saying: ‘I’m not going to let the odds get in the way of my ambition.’
He added: ‘I’m a winner, I’ve won elections, I’ve won referendums, I’ve changed the course of history.’
But his claims were met with skepticism from many in the party, who pointed out that Stride’s actual achievements were somewhat more modest.
Despite this, Stride remains determined to become the next leader of the Conservative Party, saying: ‘I’m going to do everything I can to win this election.’
It remains to be seen whether Stride’s boasts will pay off, but one thing is certain – he’s certainly made an impression.
