Major sports events: are they worth it?

Major sports events have become a staple of modern society, with billions of people around the world tuning in to watch their favorite athletes compete. But are these events truly worth the hype?
On the surface, it seems like a no-brainer. Sports events bring people together, create a sense of community, and provide a much-needed distraction from the stresses of everyday life. But scratch beneath the surface, and things get a bit more complicated.
One of the biggest issues with major sports events is the cost. Hosting a major sporting event can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and that’s not even counting the cost of security, infrastructure, and other expenses.
Take the Olympics, for example. The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo were expected to cost around $13 billion, with the majority of that going towards building new infrastructure and hosting venues. And that’s not even counting the cost of security, which was estimated to be around $1 billion.
But the cost isn’t the only issue. Major sports events also have a significant environmental impact. The 2012 London Olympics, for example, generated over 100,000 tons of waste, and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi produced over 100,000 tons of waste as well.
So, are major sports events worth it? It’s a tough question to answer. On the one hand, they bring people together and provide a sense of community. On the other hand, they can be incredibly expensive and have a significant environmental impact.
Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in between. Maybe major sports events can be worth it if they’re done in a sustainable and responsible way. Maybe we can find ways to reduce the cost and environmental impact of these events, while still bringing people together and providing a sense of community.
As the great sports philosopher, Michael Jordan, once said, ‘The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.’
So, the next time you’re watching a major sports event, take a moment to think about the cost and environmental impact. Maybe we can find a way to make these events more sustainable, and more worth it, for everyone involved.
